The 2025 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report by Kampgrounds of America (KOA) reveals a significant transformation in the camping industry, propelled by younger generations and evolving travel preferences.
Gen Z and millennials accounted for 61% of new campers in 2024, indicating a shift towards a younger demographic in camping. These groups are not only embracing traditional camping but are also driving the popularity of glamping. KOA has responded by enhancing existing sites and introducing glamping options, such as canvas tents equipped with electricity and Wi-Fi, exemplified by their Terramor Outdoor Resort in Maine.
Younger Campers Are Spending More and Shaping Outdoor Travel Trends
Despite camping’s reputation as a budget-friendly travel option, younger campers are spending more during their trips. Gen Z campers spent an average of $266 per day, significantly higher than baby boomers at $134. This spending includes gear rentals, food and local experiences.
Economic uncertainty has influenced travel behaviors, with many opting for camping over traditional vacations due to its affordability and flexibility. KOA reports that 72% of campers consider camping a cost-effective travel choice.
The report highlights a growing emphasis on wellness and mental health among campers. Nearly half of Gen Z campers use camping as a means to support their mental well-being. Additionally, pet-friendly camping is on the rise, with over half of millennial and Gen Z campers bringing dogs on their trips.
KOA projects that one million new households will try camping for the first time in 2025. The company continues to adapt to the changing landscape by modernizing its offerings to meet the expectations of a diverse and evolving camper demographic.
